Description

Charlie Ninja is a 2D side-scrolling platform game that puts players in the shoes of a ninja that throws throwing stars and other typical eastern weapons at enemies. The player can also cloak himself so that he becomes invisible for enemies and can evade attacks. Melee attacks are also possible.

Each of the stages has a different theme and a boss with a bounty at the end. The settings for the stage are the wild west, army, dilapidated industrial zone, football stadium and a mad scientists lab. Enemies attack the player directly or shoot projectiles at them. Weapon power-ups can be collected from defeated enemies and sometimes fire walls have to be circumvented. The game can be played solo or with a friend.

Charlie Ninja

Overview & History

Released into smoky arcades during the mid-1990s, Charlie Ninja stands as a cult-classic run-and-gun platformer developed by Mitchell Corporation. Eschewing the gritty realism of contemporary ninja titles, this quirky gem injects vibrant, caricature-driven humor into the genre. The storyline follows Charlie, a rotund, bandana-wearing mercenary for hire who embarks on a whimsical quest across bizarre, hazard-filled environments to rescue a kidnapped princess from an eccentric syndicate of rival ninja warlords. While it never achieved the blockbuster household status of Capcom or Konami arcade hits, Charlie Ninja earned a devoted following for its delightfully self-aware parody of shinobi tropes, bright hand-drawn sprites, and uniquely bouncy soundtrack that kept players pumping quarters into the cabinet.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Charlie Ninja blends traditional side-scrolling platforming with relentless projectile-heavy combat. Players traverse sprawling, vertically inclined stages populated by comical enemies—ranging from clumsy rooftop guards to mechanized samurai dogs. Charlie's primary offense relies on his seemingly endless supply of shurikens, but the real strategy lies in his contextual melee attacks and power-up system. Collecting specific scrolls grants elemental shurikens, massive explosive kunai, and temporary invincibility, turning Charlie into a whirling dervish of destruction. Boss encounters require precise timing, as players must dodge bullet-hell patterns while exploiting brief windows in the boss's comedic, over-the-top attack animations. The game also features hidden coin rooms and bonus minigames that reward thorough exploration and risk-taking.
