Cosmic Cop

Overview & History

Released by Irem in 1991, Cosmic Cop (known in Japan as Gallop) is a brilliant, post-apocalyptic side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that serves as a spin-off to the legendary R-Type franchise. Set on a devastated Earth overrun by the cybernetic Bydo empire, players step into the cockpit of the advanced Geo-Calibur armored patrol craft. Unlike the deep-space confines of its predecessor, this atmospheric arcade title grounds the action in ruined urban landscapes, ruined industrial zones, and submerged ruins, blending classic mecha aesthetics with relentless horizontal scrolling shooter mechanics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Cosmic Cop distinguishes itself from standard bullet-hell shooters by introducing a robust weapon upgrade system and defensive mechanics. Throughout six grueling stages, players collect power-ups to cycle through distinct offensive capabilities, including the wide-spreading wave beam, piercing lasers, and incendiary ground-hugging bombs. The standout defensive mechanic is the Front Shield—a detachable, energy-absorbing barrier that players can position manually to deflect incoming enemy projectiles or hurl directly at bosses as a devastating kinetic ram. Managing the shield's durability while dodging aggressive drone formations and massive biomechanical bosses requires both spatial awareness and split-second tactical reflexes.
