Description

B-Wings is a vertically scrolling space shooter that owes its name to the space fighter from Star Wars movies. You have a wide variety of weapons at your disposal: Fire, Cannons, Jump, Hammer, etc. Each weapon has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, Cannon fires powerful and rapid blasts, but you can only shoot directly in front of you; Van covers several directions, but has slow speed; Anti builds a protective shield around you each time you shoot, but its range is very small, and so on. You can change the weapons every time you are killed, before you run out of lives and lose the game. Typically, at the end of a level, you’ll have to face a boss enemy.

B-Wings

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1984, B-Wings (also known as *Battle Wings*) is a vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up that carves its own niche in golden-age arcade history. Set in a futuristic sci-fi universe, the storyline tasks the pilot of the advanced Battle Wing fighter with infiltrating an alien stronghold to dismantle a massive, multi-tiered mechanized threat known as the "Gorgon" empire. Unlike many contemporary contemporaries of its era that relied heavily on pure space-opera aesthetics, B-Wings combined a gritty mechanical aesthetic with distinctive evolutionary upgrade paths. While it never reached the household-name status of *Galaga* or *Gradius*, its clever approach to modular power-ups earned it a dedicated cult following and a faithful Famicom port in Japan.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The defining mechanic of B-Wings is its revolutionary weapon-pod system. Rather than collecting standard power-ups that simply increase fire rate, players capture floating alpha-numeric capsules that completely transform the fighter's offensive capabilities. The ship can equip up to 30 different weapon types, ranging from standard twin lasers and homing missiles to bizarre melee flame-whips and area-of-effect bombs. Each weapon has its own tactical utility, forcing players to adapt on the fly as wave formations change. The game consists of 35 distinct stages, cleverly presented as numbered sectors leading up to a final confrontation. Between enemy squadrons, dodging dense bullet patterns, and managing your specialized payload, survival requires memorizing stage layouts and strategically matching the right wing-attachment to the upcoming boss threat.
