Description

Commonly considered the earliest progenitor of first-person shooters (FPS), Battlezone is a 3D tank game initially released in the arcades, and later converted officially to many systems. Earth has been invaded, and you and your tank lead the defensive effort. You drive around the battlefield from a first-person view, targeting and firing at tanks, planes and UFOs. You have a radar to help you see where the enemies are in direction and distance. Objects can be used as strategic cover. Controls simulate the tracks of a tank realistically, so the direction and speed settings are varied – combining forward right and backward left movements (as you can on keyboard versions) sees you change direction more quickly.

Battlezone

Overview & History

Released by Atari, Inc. in November 1980, Battlezone is a seminal first-person vector arcade game designed by Ed Rotberg. Widely recognized as the grandfather of modern virtual reality and first-person shooters, the game placed players directly into the cockpit of a futuristic wireframe tank. Its historical significance is immense; the United States military even commissioned Atari to build a modified training simulator version called The Bradley Trainer, proving the uncanny immersion of its geometric vector graphics. Set across a desolate alien terrain dotted with erupting volcanoes, glowing distant pyramids, and radar-tracked threats, the storyline casts you as the lone commander tasked with surviving relentless waves of enemy armor, missile-firing super-tanks, and erratic flying saucers in a high-stakes, minimalist warzone.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Battlezone breaks away from standard side-scrolling shooters by utilizing a true first-person perspective viewed through a periscope-style visor. The gameplay is intensely tactical, requiring constant spatial awareness because enemies can approach from behind or off-screen. Your primary objective is to hunt down and destroy hostile units indicated on your top-mounted radar scope. Survival demands a mastery of evasive maneuvers, as enemy projectiles travel at high speeds. Players must quickly dart behind obstructive geometric mountains and blockades for vital cover. Although there are no character "moves" in the traditional sense, managing your tank's forward and reverse momentum while frantically rotating your turret creates a frantic, white-knuckle rhythm. Destroying flying saucers awards bonus points, while enemy tanks require precise, head-on or flank targeting before they return fire.
