Description

Aboard the lethal Gunship Gladiator helicopter, it is your job to ensure that a coup fails to install a dictator as leader.

The game features 12 levels split into three distinct styles. First of all you’ll be flying over a city in your helicopter, shooting out tanks by ducking low enough to target them, but also climbing to avoid the skyscrapers in the area. The third section is viewed similarly, but sees you attempting to wipe out the planes mounted on an aircraft carrier.

The second section is viewed behind your helicopter in full 3D, and adds helicopters and planes to be shot, with dodging their bullets as you duck down to shoot the tanks being the main challenge.

Thunder Blade

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987, Thunder Blade is a pioneering arcade rail-shooter that stunned players with its groundbreaking use of sprite-scaling technology, closely mirroring the hardware wizardry of Sega's legendary 'Super Scaler' era alongside games like After Burner. The game places players in the cockpit of an advanced experimental combat helicopter, tasked with single-handedly thwarting a massive terrorist army that has invaded a sprawling futuristic metropolis and its surrounding territories. Designed by Yuji Naka and his team, the arcade cabinet famously featured hydraulic-style movement in certain deluxe editions and a specialized dual-axis flight stick, capturing the raw intensity of 1980s action cinema.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game seamlessly shifts perspectives across its stages, creating a dynamic visual rhythm. Players alternate between a top-down, bird's-eye view where the helicopter bombards ground installations, and an aggressive behind-the-craft third-person perspective reminiscent of Space Harrier, navigating narrow canyons, city streets, and underground military bases. Combat relies on two primary armaments: a rapid-fire machine gun for clearing aerial and soft ground targets, and devastating air-to-ground missiles locked onto heavily armored installations, tanks, and enemy turrets. Each stage culminates in a tense, multi-layered boss encounter that demands precise dodging and sustained firepower. The brilliant pseudothreedimensional scaling makes enemy fire and obstacles rush toward the screen with startling depth, requiring split-second reflexes to survive the relentless onslaught.
