Despite being released the same year as the National Wrestling Alliance/World Championship Wrestling’s WrestleWar pay-per-view, it is not associated with any wrestling promotion. The original Japanese game cover featured a Hulk Hogan look-alike, with a bandana that spelled “Hogan”. It was changed for the European and US releases for royalties reasons. It did not change the wrestlers faces, though, which still are similar to those of real wrestling stars of the time.

Wrestle War has also been released as part of the Sega Smash Pack

The player takes control of Bruce Blade, a rookie wrestler, through a series of matches to win the Sega Wrestling Alliance championship belt by facing the following wrestlers, each possessing their unique wrestling moves:

– Mr. J (based on Jason the Terrible)
– Don Dambuster (based on Road Warrior Hawk)
– Nim Rod Falcon (based on Mil Mascaras)

Capitalizing on the late-80s sports entertainment boom, the game drops players into a global touring circuit where the ultimate goal is to defeat the nefarious reigning champion, Mr. Bruce. Unlike Technōs' more grounded beat-em-ups like Double Dragon, this title embraces the theatrical absurdity of squared-circle combat, featuring exaggerated sprite work, bombastic chiptune entrance themes, and a distinct lack of disqualifications. While it never received the home console ports of its contemporaries, it remains a beloved cult classic of the coin-op era.

Wrestle War departs from standard one-on-one fighting games by utilizing a top-down, pseudo-isometric perspective across a scrolling canvas that sometimes extends outside the ring barrier. Players select from a roster of distinct grapplers—such as the agile Bruce Bullet or the powerhouse Titan—each boasting a unique palette swap and specific weight classes that dictate their speed and striking power. The core combat loop relies heavily on a frantic button-mashing tug-of-war mechanic whenever two wrestlers lock up in a grapple; whoever taps their attack buttons faster successfully executes a high-impact suplex, pile driver, or flying elbow drop. As opponents take damage, their stamina depletes, opening up opportunities for dramatic pinfalls executed by pinning the opponent's shoulders to the canvas for a referee's three-count. The game also features chaotic multi-man tag matches and environmental weapon use, ensuring that pacing remains relentlessly fast from the opening bell to the final championship defense.
