Description

The sequel to Vanguard, Vanguard II takes players out of the caves and into the sky above Earth. Instead of merely being able to shoot in four directions the ship now has the ability to move in eight directions as it flies over the floating alien platform. Pods on the platform must be bombed while aerial defenses must be shot down. After enough pods are destroyed the core can be bombed, destroying the platform and ending the level.

Vanguard II

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1984, Vanguard II serves as a fascinating chronological and stylistic pivot from its predecessor. While the original 1981 hit was a traditional side-scrolling space shooter, this sequel boldly reimagines the franchise from a top-down, multi-directional perspective reminiscent of Namco's Xevious or Konami's TwinBee. The loose narrative casts the pilot of the formidable 'Vanguard' ship into a relentless, high-stakes military campaign to infiltrate and dismantle a heavily fortified rogue computer fortress. Across its claustrophobic, scrolling stages, players must navigate labyrinthine canyons, bypass intricate missile silos, and obliterate sprawling ground-based installations before facing formidable aerial bosses. It stands out in SNK's early catalog for demanding precise route-memorization and resource management, rewarding methodical tactical eradication over reckless trigger-happy spraying.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard vertical scrollers where movement is strictly forward-facing, Vanguard II introduces a fuel-meter mechanic alongside a distinct radar system, adding intense survival pressure to the arcade action. Players command a ship equipped with a dual-layer offense: a forward-firing aerial laser to neutralize enemy jets and hovering drones, and a targeted bomb drop to demolish strategically placed ground targets such as radar towers, fuel depots, and anti-aircraft turrets. A standout mechanical feature is the incorporation of directional thrust zones and warp portals that instantly catapult the ship across different tactical sectors of the base. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels upgrade firepower spread and grant temporary invulnerability, which is vital when navigating the dense, bullet-hell crossfire generated by late-stage enemy defensive grids.
