Description

A space-shooter. The player’s vehicle alternates between a spaceship and a type of car.

Last Duel or Last Duel: Inter Planet War 2012 is a 1988 Vertical scrolling shooter arcade game released by Capcom which was available on various PCs and later came in a compilation of arcade games called the Capcom Classics Collection – Volume 2 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PlayStation Portable.

Taking place in the year 2012 of an alternate galaxy, Last Duel involves the struggle between two planets Mu and Bacula. On planet Bacula, a strong warrior tribe known as the Galden rose to immense military power and literally conquered all of the societies on the planet. Unsatisfied with conquering just one planet, the Galden decided to conquer a neighboring terrestrial planet, Mu. Using advanced bioships, star fighters and motor vehicles, the Galden invaded Mu, destroying many of its cities and taking the planet’s ruler Queen Sheeta hostage.

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1988, Last Duel: Inter Planet War 2005 is a striking blend of vertical shoot-'em-up and vehicular combat set against a dystopian sci-fi backdrop. The storyline thrusts players into the year 2005 to overthrow the tyrannical alien emperor Bakros, who has enslaved the planet Mu. Featuring a distinct transition between vehicular road combat and high-flying space warfare, this arcade classic stands out for its creative dual-format gameplay stages and memorable synth-rock soundtrack composed by Manami Matsumae.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay alternates dramatically between intense ground-based driving sections and free-roaming aerial shoot-'em-up stages. Players pilot the customizable vehicle known as the "Mudskipper," which can transform into a jet fighter at specific waypoints. Across six diverse stages—ranging from crumbling alien highways to deep-space flotillas—players must manage their speed, dodge relentless enemy fire, and collect power-ups to upgrade their weaponry, including wide-spread lasers and homing missiles. Navigating hazardous terrain while simultaneously eliminating bosses like the mechanical behemoth at the end of stage one requires precise positioning and quick reflexes.
