Overview & History

Released by Toaplan in 1994, Snow Bros. 2: With New Elves (also known as With New Elves) serves as the vibrant arcade sequel to the beloved 1990 platformer. While the original focused exclusively on twin snowman royalty Nick and Tom, this sequel expands the roster to four distinct protagonists: Nick, and three newcomers—Pururu the water elf, Ichbee the bee, and Stout the giant. The storyline kicks off when the demon king ascends from the underworld to kidnap the princess of Snow Land, forcing this eccentric quartet of magical beings to scale multi-tiered levels, defeat bizarre bosses, and save the realm. Unfortunately, Toaplan went bankrupt shortly after release, making this title a rare and celebrated swan song for the legendary arcade developer.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop involves tossing elemental projectiles—snowballs, water droplets, honey, and heavy rocks depending on the character—at whimsical enemies until they freeze or immobilize. Once an enemy is incapacitated, players can kick them across the screen to trigger destructive bowling-pin chains that eliminate surrounding foes. Defeated monsters drop various potions that alter gameplay: red potions boost movement speed, blue potions increase projectile range, and green potions expand character size. A standout feature is the vertical level design, which includes bounce pads, conveyor belts, and crumbling platforms. Collecting the letters S-N-O-W scattered across stages triggers a bonus mode, while building up a combo meter lets players ride giant flying monsters or trigger screen-clearing item explosions.
