Description
Terra Cresta was produced by Nichibutsu in 1985.
A vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up, and the sequel to Moon Cresta.
Fly over islands shooting spaceships, ground bases and Tyrannosaurus Rexes. Destroy the special bases to release special power-ups that will increase your fire power. Use the Phoenix button to split your ship apart for increased firepower or become indestructible after the fourth bonus part has been collected.
Vertical scrolling shoot-em-up over landscape of islands shooting spaceships, ground targets, Tyransaurous Rexes and three different mothercraft ships.
Shoot silos on ground numbered 2 to 5 to release another ship part which attaches to increase firepower. Parts are 2-Wider shot, 3-Rear Shot, 4-Front cannon and 5-Rear shield.
Using the Phoenix button splits ship parts into a formation for limited time given increased fire power. The number of parts determines the formation e.g. if you have picked up two parts then a triangle is formed with your ship at the back and the other two in front.
When collect all four parts you become a glowing indestructible Phoenix for a limited time.
You have three Phoenix power-ups for each part collected. If your ship is hit, you will lose all the extra parts that you’ve picked up. If you’re hit when you have all four parts, you will only lose two.
Terra Cresta
Overview & History
Released by Nichibutsu in 1985, Terra Cresta stands as a towering pillar of the vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up genre. Following the foundational success of their earlier title Moon Cresta, Nichibutsu refined the concept of progressive ship assembly and transformed it into a frantic, alien-blasting epic. Set against a backdrop of ancient alien civilizations and mechanical deities, players pilot the state-of-the-art Wing Star fighter into the heart of the Floating Continent Mandora. Unlike standard cosmic shooters of the mid-80s, Terra Cresta weaves a distinct mythos of mechanical evolution, tasking you with liberating a fragmented world from the iron grip of the evil syndicate, Zabura. Its striking visual palette, featuring lush synthetic landscapes contrasted against harsh metallic armadas, pushed the limits of the Z80 hardware and cemented its status as an arcade cabinet classic.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
At the core of Terra Cresta is its innovative docking system. Scattered across the sprawling landscapes are abandoned fighter modules. By flying over and capturing these units, your Wing Star physically expands, transforming from a nimble single-seater into an apocalyptic, multi-tiered aerial fortress. Each docked module bestows unique firing arcs, escalating your firepower from a humble forward laser to a devastating, multi-directional wall of plasma. Timing is everything: players can execute the infamous 'Formation Attack,' detaching their assembled modules to sweep across the screen like a swirling, invulnerable dragon before re-docking. Furthermore, collecting the elusive 'P' icon grants temporary invincibility, turning your ship into a glowing, screen-clearing juggernaut capable of ramming through enemy formations with impunity.
