Description

As with Gremlin’s game Blockade, Ramtek’s Barricade is an early example of a light cycle game for arcades. Barricade is intended for either two or four players. Each player controls an ever-growing wall made up of individual small squares. These walls are growing on a fixed playfield of limited size, therefore room will eventually run out for these growing walls. So, the goal of the game is to win a round by forcing the other players wall to collide into themselves or another barrier.

The operator of the arcade machine can set the number of rounds it takes to win (from one to seven) and set how fast or slow the speed at which the walls grow (there are seven different speed options).

Barricade

Overview & History

Released into the wild arcades during the golden era of fixed-screen electronic strategy games, Barricade challenged the traditional twitch-reflex shoot-'em-up formula by introducing a fascinating psychological duel of territory control and spatial entrapment. Developed as a test of calculated aggression, players step onto an enclosed, grid-like arena where the primary objective is not merely to obliterate invading forces, but to systematically cordon off sections of the playing field. Unlike sprawling scrolling adventures, Barricade focused the player's attention entirely on a claustrophobic, single-screen playing field fraught with escalating hazards. The cabinet quickly gained a cult following among arcade-goers who appreciated its puzzle-like pacing blended with high-stakes survival mechanics, carving out a distinct niche in gaming history before the genre evolved into modern maze and trail-blazing classics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Barricade tasks the player with navigating a character across a volatile grid while constantly laying down impassable architectural lines. Every movement leaves a permanent trail behind, shrinking the overall sandbox and forcing the player to map out routes with meticulous foresight. The ultimate goal is to isolate roaming enemy sprites into shrinking, walled-off quadrants of the map, effectively starving them of movement space. However, this offensive territory-claiming is fraught with peril: colliding with your own growing trail or crashing into enemy patrols results in an instant loss of a life. As you clear stages, the enemy units become faster, more erratic, and increasingly aggressive, demanding split-second route corrections. The game relies entirely on a scoring economy based on percentage of territory claimed and swift stage clearance, rewarding patience, geometry, and nerves of steel over mindless button-mashing.
