Description

Battle of Atlantis was developed by Comsoft and published by Karateko in 1981.

Battle of Atlantis is a Scramble variant set under the sea. You control a submarine with both a forward shooting laser and a bomb which will take out objects slightly in-front and below you. The laser can be angled up and down by moving your vessel in the appropriate direction. Your only aim is to take down as many of your enemies as possible before your lives run out.

The entities that are bent on your destruction include mines, which slowly float to the top of the water as you approach, fast moving sharks, randomly wandering octopuses and ships that drop depth charges on you from above.

Battle of Atlantis

Overview & History

Released in the golden era of coin-op arcades by Subsino in 1999, Battle of Atlantis is a mythological side-scrolling beat-'em-up that plunges players into the sunken ruins of the legendary lost continent. Moving away from standard medieval fantasy tropes, the game distinguishes itself with a distinct Greco-Atlantean aesthetic featuring bio-mechanical sea monsters, corrupted merfolk, and towering cybernetic leviathans guarding Poseidon's realm. While initially flying under the radar compared to industry giants from Capcom and Konami, the game developed a cult following among arcade enthusiasts for its unforgiving difficulty curve, digitized sprite work, and seamless blending of ancient mythology with pulp sci-fi machinery.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players select from a trio of Atlantean champions—ranging from heavy-hitting trident-wielding warriors to agile spear-throwers—each equipped with distinct martial arts combos, throw animations, and screen-clearing magical spells powered by collected crystal orbs. The core loop demands strict crowd control, as waves of aggressive aquatic mutants flank the player from both the foreground and background planes. Unique to Battle of Atlantis is the "Tidal Surge" mechanic, which allows characters to unleash directional wave blasts by chaining rapid melee strikes. Boss encounters, such as the multi-phased Kraken-Mech hybrid, require precise positioning and memorization of telegraph wind-ups to survive the relentless onslaught.
