Description

Bio-Ship Paladin was produced by UPL in 1990.

Atlantal, a peaceful planet, has been attacked by an invading alien fleet known only as The Aggressors, leaving the capital city Delila in ruins. In order to sop The Aggressors, the people of Atlantal send the most powerful fighter ship on the planet, the bio-ship Gomorrah.

Uchū Senkan Gomorrah (Space Battle Ship Gomorrah) is a horizontally-scrolling shooter. The player controls the titular ship, Gomorrah, which can shoot both straight forward as in most shooting games, as well as freely in any direction via an aiming cursor, which is controlled independently of the ship itself. Additionally, there are several power-ups that can be found, including speed-ups, additional mounted guns, and the life-up, which will not only increase the ship’s armor, but also cause it to grow in size as well.

The game features 9 stages, each with a boss at the end, as well as one or two-player simultaneous play. The game difficulty has been rebalanced from the arcade to compensate for the lack of a trackball to control the aiming cursor; the player must stop their ship in order to move the cursor.

Overview & History

Released into Japanese arcades by UPL in 1989, Bio-ship Paladin (known originally as *Xexex*'s spiritual predecessor in weird biomechanical aesthetics) drops players into a grim, organic universe. The storyline details a desperate war against a rogue, sentient supercomputer and its mutating biological armada. Rather than piloting a traditional polished metal fighter, you command the Paladin—a bizarre, semi-living spacecraft forged from advanced cybernetic tissue. UPL crafted a distinct identity for this side-scrolling shoot-em-up by fusing techno-organic imagery with intense, punishing difficulty, making it a standout cult classic among late-80s coin-op cabinets.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gimmick of Bio-ship Paladin revolves around its revolutionary manual-aim weapon system. Instead of firing solely straight ahead, players command a detachable, articulated energy arm extending from the front of the ship. Using dedicated rotary inputs, you can freely rotate this bio-plasma cannon 360 degrees around the Paladin independently of your flight path. This allows for brilliant tactical coverage, letting you snake laser fire around solid obstacles or blast trailing swarms while retreating. Power-ups alter the behavior of this biomechanical whip, shifting its output from concentrated piercing beams to sprawling scatter-shot waves that illuminate the fleshy, Giger-esque cavern walls.
