Description

Blandia is a versus fighting game that takes place on the Great Continent of Eurasia and focuses on the resurrection of the demonic lord Gildus, who must be stopped by one of the six greatest warriors in the land, led by the noble Gurianos. The game’s stand-out feature is the usage of weapons and armor: using traditional fighting game controls with strikes aimed high, middle, or low, characters must destroy the opponent’s armor in order to win. In both one- and two-player mode, a round lasts five minutes; if it doesn’t end in a knock-out, the character with higher hit points left is declared the winner. In the single-player mode opponents can be chosen by the player on the way to the final battle in the Golden Castle, rather than being selected randomly by the computer AI.

Blandia

Overview & History

Released in 1992 by Allumer, Blandia is an obscure and fascinatingly eccentric arcade fighting game that drops players into a high-fantasy medieval realm plagued by dark forces. Unlike many of its contemporaries that chased the Street Fighter II formula of hand-to-hand martial artists, Blandia uniquely outfits all of its combatants in heavy, clunky suits of armor. The game's storyline revolves around a legendary, mystical set of armor known as the Blandia, capable of granting ultimate power to whoever unites its scattered pieces. Warriors, knights, and sorcerers from across the continent converge in a brutal tournament to claim the relics. Though it never achieved the mainstream, coin-eating popularity of Capcom or SNK fighters, Blandia has cultivated a dedicated cult following among arcade historians for its bizarre aesthetic choices, pre-rendered 3D-style sprite work, and notoriously stiff, deliberate combat pacing that forces players to respect the sheer weight of their armored combatants.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Blandia stands out due to its armor degradation system. As fighters exchange blows, their physical plate armor visibly cracks, shatters, and falls off piece by piece, exposing vulnerable flesh and altering character hitboxes and defensive stats as the round progresses. Fights are strictly one-on-one affairs utilizing a standard eight-directional joystick paired with a heavy-hitting three-button layout for weak, medium, and strong attacks. Special moves require precise quarter-circle or charge inputs, often accompanied by distinct fantasy-themed magic projectiles or sweeping sword arcs. Defensive play is crucial, as the heavy recovery frames on missed attacks leave characters wide open for devastating counter-punches. The roster features a diverse array of combatants—ranging from traditional broadsword-wielding knights to axe-toting barbarians and agile spear-maidens—each boasting a unique repertoire of brutal normal strikes, devastating throws, and screen-clearing super maneuvers.
