Description

Bloxeed is a Tetris variant. The player is presented with an empty field and from the top there is one block at a time falling down. There are blocks of various forms available which can be rotated and moved left and right. The goal is create full lines which then disappear and reward points for the high score list. The more lines are cleared at once (the maximum are four), the more points are earned. When lines are cleared, the player’s level rises and so does the falling speed of the blocks. At the top of the screen is a preview of the next block.

Besides this known principle, this game adds two features to the mix: in fixed intervals the game adds garbage blocks on the field (lines with one or two holes) and bonus blocks where a part of the block is replaced with a number or letter. When clearing it, the player is rewarded with one of five treats: a bird which drops blocks during descend, a satellite which shoots blocks, a bomb respectively a weight which destroy the blocks they land on and the last bonus clears four lines instantly.

Bloxeed

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 for arcade systems, Bloxeed is a fascinating sci-fi themed tile-matching puzzle game that acts as a spiritual successor and thematic cousin to Atari's legendary Tetris. Capitalizing on the late-80s puzzle craze, Sega infused the traditional falling-block formula with unique structural mechanics, a distinct dystopian aesthetic, and a storyline where players dismantle towering monolithic monuments across different alien planets to stop a galactic crisis. While it never achieved the ubiquitous household name status of its Russian predecessor, Bloxeed carved out a dedicated cult following among arcade enthusiasts for its tense cooperative modes and relentless difficulty curve.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard falling-block titles, Bloxeed introduces dynamic obstacles and special items that fundamentally alter puzzle strategies. As players rotate and fit descending tetrominoes into place, they must contend with pre-existing debris fields and hazardous "nuclear blocks." Clearing lines rewards players with power-up capsules that can trigger screen-clearing explosions, erase specific rows, or temporarily slow down the descent speed. The ultimate objective is clearing a set quota of lines before the stack breaches the top of the playfield. The game also features a frantic two-player competitive and cooperative mode where clearing lines sends garbage rows to your opponent's screen, adding a layer of tactical aggression to the otherwise solitary puzzle genre.
