Description
Bomb Bee is the first sequel to Gee Bee. Just like the predecessor it’s a variant of Breakout with some elements of pinball added. The game looks and plays similarly to the original with the player using a rotary joystick to control two paddles left and right. Points are scored by hitting bricks as well as bumpers, spinners and drops. By clearing out bricks on the side of the screen the value of the bumpers will increase from 10 to 100. By clearing out the bricks on the top a bumper worth 1000 points will appear. Hitting this one several times will cause it to explode and a new set of bricks will appear. The main difference from Gee Bee is the design of the table with different placements of bricks and bumpers.
Bomb Bee
Overview & History
Developed and published by Namco in 1979, Bomb Bee stands as a fascinating and lesser-known historical stepping stone between the pure block-breaking mechanics of Breakout and the maze-shooter hybrid formulas that dominated the late 70s golden age of arcades. While often overshadowed by its contemporaries, this coin-op cabinet introduced a frantic, vertically scrolling variation to the traditional bat-and-ball genre by blending perimeter destruction with projectile combat. The game's storyline casts players as the titular mechanical bee navigating a hazard-filled mechanical grid, tasked with detonating clustered explosive blocks while avoiding incoming aerial obstacles and enemy drones. Its distinct visual style, featuring colorful, high-contrast arcade graphics and primitive sound synthesis, captures the purest essence of early coin-op experimentation before standardized genres fully ossified.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard racket-and-ball games, Bomb Bee plays out on a vertically oriented screen where your paddle controls the bottom boundary, but the objective requires clearing layered strata of interactive cells. Instead of merely deflecting a standard sphere, players manipulate a specialized projectile capable of triggering chain reactions among the explosive honeycomb blocks. Enemy characters continuously spawn from the upper portion of the playfield, dropping hazards that can warp your trajectory or actively damage your paddle if you fail to intercept them in time. Successfully clearing a stage requires balancing offensive block demolition with precise defensive positioning, creating a tense arcade rhythm that rewards spatial awareness and anticipatory aiming rather than simple reactionary reflexes.
