Description

Bump ‘n’ Jump, known in Japan as Burnin’ Rubber, is a 1982 Japanese arcade game created by Data East Corporation, is an action racing game played from a top down point of view. As you race through the treacherous and ever changing roadways, the numerous enemy cars will be trying to bump you off the road. You need to make sure you bump the cars out of the way before you get bumped and crash into the sides yourself! Your car also has the ability to jump quite high if you have enough speed. This is useful to jump over enemy cars if there are too many in the way, and must also be used to jump gaps in the roadway and other highway obstacles. As the levels progress, the road becomes narrower with more obstacles in the way, and the other cars increase in number and in aggressiveness.

Bump 'n' Jump

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1982, Bump 'n' Jump (known in Japan as Burner) is a frantic vehicular combat arcade game that anticipated the vertical-scrolling vehicular combat genre. Players take control of a high-powered red sports car navigating through treacherous, hazard-filled highways across changing seasons—from the vibrant greenery of spring to the snowy tundras of winter. Unlike standard racers, the core objective is sheer vehicular aggression. You must survive a relentless gauntlet of rival drivers by violently forcing them off the asphalt, all while executing precise leaps over gaping chasms, rivers, and concrete barricades.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop is a high-stakes balance of speed control and offensive driving. Your car features a signature leaping mechanic that allows you to soar over water hazards and obstacles, though misjudging distances results in an instant, fiery plunge. Offense is achieved through the 'bumping' mechanic: slamming your vehicle into the flanks of rival cars forces them into roadside barriers, trees, or guardrails, eliminating them and earning crucial points. However, aggression comes at a cost; every collision damages your chassis, and fuel constantly drains, forcing players to grab fuel icons scattered across the track. The difficulty ramps up mercilessly, introducing narrow bridges, oil slicks, and erratic enemy AI that actively tries to box you into danger zones.
