Description

China Gate is a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em-up game with platform elements for one or two players. The game offers a roster of three characters to choose from who have to recover a stolen book. These are the monkey man Gocoo, pig man Hakai and bird man Gojou.

There are 3 buttons, one to jump, another to attack and another for power-ups. There is a limited time to defeat the numerous enemies that appear and jump through the platforms to harm the player. At the end of each level there is final boss. It is possible to obtain power-ups like beams that neutralize all the visible enemies of the screen.

China Gate

Overview & History

Released by Technōs Japan in 1988, China Gate (originally known in Japan as Tekkden) is an arcade action platformer loosely based on the classic 16th-century Chinese epic novel Journey to the West. Eschewing the gritty urban beat-'em-up formula of Technōs's earlier hit Double Dragon, this title transports players to a mythical, demon-infested ancient China. Operating on custom hardware, the game stands out in the late-80s arcade landscape for its vibrant, highly stylized fantasy sprites, distinct rotating stages, and a colorful, whimsical yet challenging mythological aesthetic that pits classic literary archetypes against hordes of supernatural beasts and warlords.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, China Gate combines traditional horizontal platforming with vertical depth, allowing players to move up and down distinct planes while battling waves of enemies. Players can choose from a roster of legendary heroes—including the agile monkey king-inspired Gung-Ho, the staff-wielding Kintaro, and the mystic Sam—each possessing unique normal attacks, throwable projectile weapons, and devastating magic spells that clear the screen of minions. Collecting magical scrolls dropped by defeated foes increases your character's power level, dynamically changing their offensive capabilities and visual prowess. The game features demanding boss encounters at the end of each stage, requiring precise timing, projectile deflection, and clever use of environmental hazards to conquer the fiendish warlords guarding the gates of heaven and hell.
