Description

You play a small character who floats about on a cloud and shoots small balls of energy at bad guys who fly at you from the left and right of the screen. You can collect powerups and visit shops to upgrade your offensive and defensive powers. There are a number of different stages which are punctated by a mini-boss half way through and a big (literally) boss at the end.

This is one of the only games ever made which features flying noodle bowls and bears with guns.

Released by Taito in 1988, Chuka Taisen (often translated as The War in medieval China or Chinese Odyssey) is a delightfully quirky horizontal scrolling shoot-'em-up steeped in fantastical East Asian folklore. Developed during the golden era of arcade gaming, the game casts players as Rambutan, a pint-sized, spear-wielding Taoist monk who takes to the mystical skies riding a magical floating cloud. Unlike the grim, mechanical sci-fi shoot-'em-ups that dominated the late '80s, Chuka Taisen stands out with its vibrant, pastel-hued aesthetic, caricature-style mythological enemies ranging from mischievous demons to giant flying fish, and a lighthearted, whimsical atmosphere. The storyline takes Rambutan across seven distinct stages of ancient mystical realms to banish an invading horde of evil spirits threatening the peace of the mortal world.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Chuka Taisen employs classic shmup mechanics infused with distinct offensive and defensive twists. Rambutan is armed primarily with a forward-thrusting spear for direct attacks and projectile spells that can be fired continuously. However, the game introduces a unique directional attack mechanic: players can hold specific buttons to hurl their spear vertically or diagonally, allowing for versatile coverage against ground-dwelling and ceiling-crawling monsters. Scattered throughout the stages are magical jars. Shooting these items releases power-ups that alter Rambutan's offensive capabilities—granting multi-directional shots, explosive fireballs, or temporary invulnerability. Additionally, players can collect specialized talismans that act screen-clearing smart bombs. The pacing is frantic, requiring precise dodging through dense bullet hell patterns while managing verticality on the floating cloud.
