Description
Cleopatra Fortune is a 1997 falling-block puzzle game featuring an anime Egyptian theme. Groups of stones and gems of different shapes fall from the top of a well. Gems can be cleared by enclosing them within a group of stones, and stones can be cleared by making complete rows from them. Blocks will fall when those under them are cleared, which can create chains for more points.
The game includes three different play modes. First is a standard endless mode where play continues until the player is overwhelmed by the blocks. Second is a versus mode for two players. Last is a puzzle mode where the player is given a set field, a set sequence of drops, and a specific goal such as clearing all the gems or achieving a chain of a certain length. The puzzle mode has the player rescuing Cleopatra’s friends who have been trapped in a pyramid by the evil Sphinx.
Following the initial arcade release in 1997, a PlayStation version and a Sega Saturn version were released in Japan, followed later by the Dreamcast version in 2001. A PlayStation version was released in the USA and Europe in 2003. An arcade only sequel called Cleopatra Fortune Plus was released later in 2001, on the Sega NAOMI system. Both the Dreamcast port and this new sequel were created in association with Altron instead of Natsume.

Overview & History
Released by Taito in 1996 as an arcade coin-op before finding a cult following on the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, Cleopatra Fortune is a mesmerizing fusion of traditional falling-block puzzle design and archaeological excavation. Set deep within the tombs of ancient Egypt, the game tasks players with helping the titular queen seal away cursed artifacts before the rising chamber buries her. Unlike its contemporaries that focused solely on color-matching, Taito's puzzle gem introduces a hybrid mechanic where you must physically trap scattered fragments of mummies, gold, and jewels inside stone sarcophaguses. As the ancient masonry piles up, the gameplay shifts from leisurely sorting to frantic, claustrophobic survival, underscored by a haunting, mystical chiptune soundtrack that evokes the atmospheric dread of exploring a forgotten pyramid.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The core mechanics revolve around managing two distinct types of falling objects: treasures (gold bars, jewels, and pottery) and mummies, alongside solid stone blocks and sealed sarcophaguses. Your goal is to completely surround clusters of treasure or mummies with unbroken perimeter walls made of stone blocks or sarcophaguses. When an enclosure is hermetically sealed, the trapped artifacts instantly vanish, earning you points and clearing vital space on the board. If you drop a sarcophagus directly onto matching treasures or a mummy, it instantly encapsulates them, triggering satisfying chain reactions that reward high-level spatial awareness. If the stack of unsealed debris reaches the top of the screen, it is game over. The arcade version features progressive difficulty ramps, forcing players to master rapid corner-rotations and predictive placement under severe time pressure.
