Description

The earthquake that struck the city at 7:13 A.M. on February 10, 2000, measured 7 on the richter scale. The veneer of peace that had been maintained in the city’s streets by total information control suddenly vanished, and the computer-controlled concrete jungle stopped functioning. A major shift in the Earth’s crust had severed the city from its surrounding landform, leaving it an island with virtually no outside contact. Money-crazed inhabitants soon lashed out for the city’s remaining but useless vestiges of power, preaching salvation while hiding their wicked motives. Sex, crime and drugs ruled the streets, as the city began to decay. Ironically, they called the wretched remains of their city “Eden- the last paradise.” It is now a decade later. The year is 2010.

The Fallen Angels

Overview & History

Released in 1998 by Psikyo, The Fallen Angels (also known as Daimaju Chikyuu) stands as a cult-classic, cyberpunk fighting game that never quite achieved mainstream arcade dominance, making original arcade boards exceptionally rare today. Set in a dystopian, rain-slicked near-future metropolis plagued by corporate corruption and occult underworlds, the game's narrative follows a diverse cast of outcasts, mercenaries, and supernatural entities clashing in the shadows. Unlike the brightly colored aesthetics of its late-90s contemporaries, Psikyo infused this title with a gritty, bleak atmosphere, featuring dark, industrial stages and an eclectic, heavy-synth soundtrack that heightened the oppressive mood.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, The Fallen Angels is renowned for its high-risk, high-reward combat system that emphasizes ruthless aggression. Players choose from a roster of distinct fighters, such as the cyborg enforcer Harry Ness or the martial artist Tatania, each boasting a complex arsenal of special moves, chaining combos, and devastating desperation attacks. The game introduces unique defensive mechanics, including precise timing for parries and sidesteps that allow fighters to maneuver around incoming linear projectiles. The pacing is deliberately fast and punishing, requiring strict execution of command inputs—such as quarter-circle motions combined with heavy attack buttons—to juggle opponents and exploit recovery frames. Its distinct aesthetic, combined with an uncompromising difficulty curve, cements its legacy as a fascinating piece of arcade fighting game history.
