Description

After an epic battle on planet Darius, the planet seems to whither, forcing a massive emigration to the planet Vadis. However, after much time passed, these immigrants decided to return to their home planet. While their return plans were taking shape, an unknown force began destroying their ports of transit and docking both aerial and nautical.

The destroyers are now chasing after the main convoy of ships (which is presumed to be used in the transporting of people between Vadis and Darius). As the convoy approaches Vadis the evil hands of the destroyers extends towards the Vadis’s INS (Immigration & Naturalization Service).

One by one, the attacking enemy slaughters resisting Silverhawk soldiers. Silverhawk is now left with only two planes, and these planes head into battle with the aspirations of it’s people in tow…

Darius Gaiden

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1994, Darius Gaiden: Silver Hawk stands as a monumental masterpiece in the horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up genre. Eschewing the direct chronological continuity of its predecessors, 'Gaiden' (meaning side-story) plunges players into a surreal, aquatic-themed sci-fi universe where humanity’s pilots, Proco and Toria, navigate biomechanical terrors. Visually, the game is heavily inspired by ancient mythology, biology, and H.R. Giger's bio-mechanical aesthetic, featuring haunting backdrops of decaying planetary crusts, ancient ruins, and cosmic abysses. Driven by Zuntata composer Hisayoshi Ogura’s legendary, genre-blending techno-opera soundtrack—featuring chilling operatic chants—the arcade experience remains remarkably atmospheric, cementing its legacy as a distinct artistic triumph in Taito's iconic franchise.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Darius Gaiden retains the series' signature multi-tiered branching stage selection, allowing players to choose their path across up to 28 potential zones, culminating in distinct endings. Core survival relies on the iconic power-up system: collecting red, green, and blue crystals upgrades your Silver Hawk's missiles, lasers, and defensive shields. A revolutionary new mechanic introduced in Gaiden is the "Capture Ball." By destroying glowing command enemies, players can snag this item to brainwash sub-bosses and medium-sized foes, turning their formidable firepower against the onslaught of alien sea-creatures. Every stage concludes with a colossal, iconic boss fight modeled after aquatic life—such as coelacanths, seahorses, and armored whales—requiring precise bullet-hell dodging and targeted destruction of specific armor plates.
