Description

Desert Assault or Thunder Zone (Japanese/Europe name) is a isometric scrolling military themed shoot ’em up game where you take control of one of four commandos operating in the Persian gulf. Each commando has their own look and special limited bomb.

As you walk through the stages you fight a variety of enemies on foot, vehicles, static guns and bosses. While playing destroyed enemies drop weapons and items to restore hit points that can be picked up. Weapons include a shotgun, machinegun, bazooka, rocket launcher and flamethrower. Sometimes a vehicle must be mounted. These include a car and some kind of desert/snowmobile. There are two and four player versions. In the slightly different Japanese version the second stage takes place in the Artic while in the other versions the second stage takes place in the desert.

Desert Assault

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1992 as the arcade sequel to the cult-classic Heavy Barrel, Desert Assault (known in Japan as Desert War) is a military-themed, overhead run-and-gun shooter. Set against the backdrop of a fictional Middle Eastern conflict, players assume the role of an elite four-man commando unit deployed to dismantle a rogue dictator's heavily fortified technological empire. Operating on Data East's robust 16-bit hardware, the game distinguished itself in smoky arcades with its gritty, modern-warfare aesthetic, massive vehicular combat sequences, and support for up to four simultaneous players, creating chaotic, cooperative firefights.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Desert Assault blends vertical and multi-directional scrolling shooter mechanics with beat-'em-up spatial awareness. Players choose from four distinct commandos—Hawkeye, Smiley, Griff, and Cool—each wielding unique primary assault rifles, though their core attributes center around high-mobility room-clearing. Unlike standard platform shooters, the game gives players a dedicated dodge-roll mechanic to evade dense barrages of mortar fire, sniper rounds, and mechanized infantry. Throughout the blistering stages, players can hijack stationary machine gun nests, drive armored personnel carriers, and pilot attack helicopters to turn the tide against relentless enemy battalion waves. Destructible environments allow players to blast through concrete barricades and sandbag bunkers, revealing hidden weapon upgrades like heavy flamethrowers, guided rocket launchers, and invulnerability power-ups before facing towering, multi-tiered mechanical boss units.
