Overview & History

Released by Kaneko in 1989, DJ Boy is a cult-classic side-scrolling beat 'em up that swaps gritty urban gang warfare for a uniquely playful, rollerskating aesthetic. The storyline follows two hip-hop-loving protagonists, DJ and his rival-turned-ally Kato, whose boombox is stolen by a mischievous hoodlum named "Big Trouble." To reclaim their prized music player, the duo must skate through vibrant city streets, amusement parks, and construction sites, thrashing bizarre enemies like punk rockers, hefty sumo wrestlers, and even rogue construction workers using only their fists and unmatched agility on wheels.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard walking brawlers of the late '80s, DJ Boy defines itself entirely through its momentum-based rollerskating mechanic. Players are constantly in motion, requiring precise timing to execute flying kicks, rapid-fire punches, and devastating spinning attacks while maintaining balance. Along the journey, players can collect spray cans to upgrade their skating gear, defense, and offensive capabilities at hidden mobile shops operated by friendly mechanics. The game also features a memorable two-player simultaneous cooperative mode, colorful sprite work, and an upbeat chiptune soundtrack that complements its energetic hip-hop theme.
