Released during the golden age of arcade gaming, *Drakton* is a cult-classic side-scrolling action title developed by Jaleco in 1986. While overshadowed by contemporary giants like *Ghosts 'n Goblins*, this dark fantasy coin-op carved out a dedicated following due to its unique premise: players control Varis, a disgraced knight who voluntarily drinks a cursed dragon-blood elixir to gain monstrous powers, embarking on a vengeance quest against the corrupt high-council of Valen. Though it never received a massive commercial console port at the time, its distinctive gothic pixel art and unforgiving difficulty have made it a legendary holy grail for retro arcade collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard sword-and-shield platformers of the era, *Drakton* introduces a dynamic "Metamorphosis Meter." As Varis slays demonic hordes, his blood-rage builds, eventually allowing him to temporarily transform into a half-dragon hybrid. In this feral state, standard sword slashes are replaced by sweeping flame breaths and devastating tail swipes, though staying in beast mode too long drains the player's permanent health pool. The game spans five harrowing stages—ranging from the crumbling catacombs of Agor to the floating Obsidian Citadels—culminating in frantic multi-tiered boss fights that require precise timing, mastery of invulnerability frames, and strategic conservation of rare elemental crystal drops.
