Description

Planet X is a synthetic industrial planetoid whose most notable feature is the research laboratory of the buxom and brainy Dr. Sarah Bellum. Evil aliens called Reptilons invade the planet, capture the good doctor, and force the rest of the humans to manufacture a robot army to take over the Earth.

The player must shoot their way through a series of maze-like levels, releasing the human hostages along the way. Levers must be found and thrown to activate the escalators which allow access to new areas. Gems can be collected to increase the power of the player’s ray gun, and food lockers may be broken into for a health boost.

Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters

Overview & History

Released by Atari Games in 1989, Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters is a coin-op isometric sci-fi masterpiece heavily inspired by 1950s B-movies and comic books. The storyline follows space cadets Regina and Jake (or optionally Capt. Tom and Dr. Joy), who are visiting Planet Planet only to find it conquered by the villainous Reptilons. These tyrannical alien lizard-men have enslaved the native humanoid population and forced them to construct an army of mechanical metal monsters. Players must navigate treacherous industrial complexes, laboratories, and volcanic caverns to rescue stranded hostages while dodging hazards before the entire planet self-destructs. Distinctive for its bright, campy aesthetic and dual-stick shooting mechanics wrapped in an isometric perspective, the game remains a cult-classic arcade oddity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay requires balancing aggressive combat with precision rescue operations across hazard-filled, sloping terrain. Armed with twin ray guns, your heroes can fire in eight distinct isometric directions to blast walking vacuum-like robots, hovering drones, and gun-toting Reptilons. A core objective on every stage is locating and liberating captive scientists and lab assistants, who rewarding players with bonus points and extra energy upon reaching safety. Movement is complicated by deadly environmental hazards, including toxic green slime, electric floors, moving conveyor belts, and crumbling floor tiles. Players must constantly manage their character's health meter, jump strategically across multi-tiered platforms, and trigger timed switches to open blast doors and halt factory machinery.
