Extermination

Overview & History

Released during the golden age of arcade action, Extermination is a gritty, sci-fi beat-em-up that thrusts players into a dystopian future overrun by biomechanical mutations. Developed for coin-op cabinets, the game gained a cult following for its relentless difficulty, atmospheric synth-wave soundtrack, and uncompromising cyberpunk aesthetics. Rather than focusing on martial arts, the narrative tasks players with guiding genetically enhanced mercenaries through claustrophobic laboratory corridors to purge an out-of-control alien bio-weapon experiment before containment fails entirely.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling brawlers, Extermination introduces a unique "Overheat" mechanic to its melee and projectile combat. Players can choose between two distinct protagonists: Jax, a heavy-set cyborg wielding a plasma-edge broadsword, and Vex, a nimble operative equipped with neural-blades and high-velocity kinetic pistols. Performing consecutive heavy attacks builds up a heat gauge; if the meter maxes out, the character suffers a temporary cooldown, leaving them vulnerable to swarming enemies. The game features branching corridor paths, environmental hazards like electrified floor grids, and devastating screen-clearing special moves that consume a portion of the player's health bar. Boss encounters require precise timing to dodge sweeping tentacle attacks and laser arrays, rewarding pattern memorization and aggressive spacing over button-mashing.
