Description

Galmedes is a space themed vertically scrolling shoot ’em up game where you take control of either one of the pilots Foo or Bar and their ships. In the game you engage the forces of evil dictator Gildy from a distant planet called Gaston, who has come to conquer the Galmedes galaxy, your galaxy. With the invasion force having success your scientists have begun research on a weapon that can defeat them. Arming your ship with this weapon, you are now ready to face them.

As you make progress you fight of various spacecraft’s, static guns and bosses power-ups. The game offers a base weapon and three distinct weapon patrons that can be collected from destroyed enemies. These are a laser (blue) shooting strait forward, a wide shooting weapon (orange) shooting in several directions forward and a three-way (purple) weapon shooting forward and in two directions backward. Firepower can be increased by consuming addition power-ups. When multiple weapon patrons are collected you can switch freely between them. If the fire button is held down for a certain duration of time the selected weapon charges and when released it creates a powerful burst attack. The game can be played solo or with a friend.

Galmedes

Overview & History

Released by Raizing in 1992, Galmedes is a cult-classic vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up that occupies a fascinating niche in arcade history. Unlike its contemporaries that leaned heavily into dark, biomechanical terror or hyper-futuristic space operas, Galmedes presents a vibrant, retro-futuristic war against an alien armada known as the Zolig Empire. The storyline follows elite pilots flying bio-mechanical experimental fighters dispatched to pierce the enemy's dimensional stronghold and avert the total annihilation of Earth. Though it never achieved the ubiquitous mainstream household name status of Capcom's 1942 or Cave's later bullet-hell titles, Galmedes earned a fiercely loyal following among arcade purists for its distinct aesthetic, inventive scoring system, and unconventional weapon upgrades.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Galmedes stands apart from standard shmup convention through its unique power-up gauge and shot-charging mechanic. Instead of merely collecting floating item capsules to upgrade your ship universally, players charge their main cannon by holding down the attack button to unleash devastating screen-clearing special attacks tailored to their chosen fighter. The game features three distinct ships, each boasting a completely different payload: wide-spread plasma lasers, concentrated piercing photon torpedoes, and homing missile arrays. Furthermore, collecting specific crystal power-ups fills a secondary meter that, when triggered, grants temporary invulnerability and a localized screen wipe. The pacing is relentless, demanding precise micro-movements through intricate lattice-work laser barriers and dense bullet patterns across six increasingly hostile stages, culminating in multi-tiered boss transformations.
