Description

Garyo Retsuden is a weird, overhead run-and-gun with a “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” motif. The heroes are three brothers: Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, as they set off to save the princess, held by Lu Bu. Each of them wields a different weapon – bow and arrow, axes, and throwing knives – but they all fundamentally play the same. Each level is filled with power-ups, including weapon upgrades, suits to absorb hits, and shoes to walk faster. There are also horses stationed regularly, which don’t really do a whole lot, but can absorb a bit of extra damage, and can be healed by gobbling up the carrots that are just lying around.

This game appears to be a Japan-only release.

Garyo Retsuden

Overview & History

Released in 1989 by Data East, Garyo Retsuden (often known overseas as Cobra Command's thematic sibling or simply recognized as a cult-classic side-scrolling beat-'em-up/action hybrid) immerses players in a mythical, feudal-fantasy Japan. Unlike standard urban brawlers of its era, Data East infused this arcade cabinet with heavy folklore, tasking players with battling monstrous yokai, heavily armored samurai warlords, and supernatural bosses across ancient provinces. The game is celebrated for its distinct sprite scaling and rich, hand-drawn mythological backdrop, though it remains a relatively rare coin-op collector's piece today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Garyo Retsuden combines traditional lateral beat-'em-up progression with distinct hack-and-slash mechanics. Players choose from specialized martial artists, each wielding traditional weaponry like the katana, naginata, or iron tetsubo, dictating their specific reach, recovery frames, and crowd-control capabilities. Beyond standard physical combos, characters can unleash screen-clearing mystical elemental spells by collecting rare orb drops scattered throughout destructible environment props. The enemy AI is notably aggressive, requiring players to master defensive blocks and timing-based evades rather than endless button-mashing. Boss encounters serve as puzzle-like endurance tests, demanding precise positioning to bypass impenetrable shields and multi-phase transformations.
