Description

Gekirindan (逆鱗弾 “Imperial Wrath Bullet”) is a vertical scrolling shooter developed by Taito where players select one of three different fighters (a futuristic fighter jet, a helicopter conditioned to space travel and a remodeled old-fashioned plane) against a destructive army of mechs throughout different time periods.

In the year 3195, a time machine is created on Earth and is promptly stolen by an unidentified, mechanized being known only as Huge-Boss. This entity then uses the time machine to travel back in time and destroy 3000 years of human history. The only resistance Huge-Boss faces is a group of pilots from different time periods who aim to stop him, although some of them have their own motives other than saving mankind.
Each fighter has a different shot pattern that can be upgraded or changed. There are also the side-weapon pick-ups including a pair of homing lasers, diagonal firing napalm and missiles.

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1995 for the arcade platform, Gekirindan (meaning "Fierce Attack Raging Typhoon") is a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up that uniquely blends traditional sci-fi interstellar combat with time-travel mechanics. Players pilot advanced fighter craft across three distinct historical epochs: the prehistoric era populated by mechanized dinosaurs, the modern war-torn skies, and a futuristic metropolis on the brink of annihilation. Unlike many contemporary bullet-hell titles that focused purely on dodging dense particle patterns, Gekirindan stands out for its vibrant sprite artwork, heavily orchestrated arcade soundtrack, and its distinct approach to weapon progression, giving it a cult following among retro arcade enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a three-tier ship selection system, allowing players to choose between the balanced Type-A Red Hawk, the wide-spreading Type-B Blue Thunder, and the focused laser-heavy Type-C Yellow Viper. Each ship possesses distinct movement speeds and bomb-clearing capabilities. Power-ups collected from destroyed enemy squadrons alter the primary fire into explosive spread shots, homing missiles, or concentrated plasma beams. The defining mechanic is the time-shift gauge: as players destroy enemies, they accumulate energy to unleash screen-clearing temporal blasts that freeze enemy projectiles and temporarily decimate boss armor, adding a layer of tactical resource management to the traditional frantic dodging.
