Description

A 1989 horizontal space shooter from East Technology.

In a future setting, the dimensional, suggestively demonic, creature and title character Gigandes suddenly awakens. Residing deep below the Earth’s surface, it calls its own worshippers and space force from other galaxies to the Milky Way in order to conquer mankind. Earth’s defenses constructs the Round-37, a small but powerful space fighter with the intent of stopping Gigandes and its evil plans, combating its forces and influences on Earth and in space.

Gigandes

Overview & History

Released by East Technology in 1989, Gigandes is a relatively obscure yet brilliantly bizarre side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that stands apart from its contemporaries through its unsettling, biomechanical aesthetic. While most coin-ops of the era favored sleek sci-fi fighters or fantasy tropes, Gigandes drops the player into the claustrophobic corridors of a sentient, fleshy alien superorganism. The storyline casts you as the pilot of an advanced symbiotic starfighter sent on a desperate, one-way suicide mission to eradicate the sprawling, grotesque parasitic threat from the inside out. Visually, the title draws heavy inspiration from classic body horror, featuring pulsing walls, skeletal ribcage tunnels, and grotesque organic bosses that ooze personality and dread.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard horizontal shooters where your ship relies solely on fixed forward fire, Gigandes introduces a dynamic tactical layer via its unique power-up system. Players collect amber-like bio-pods dropped by specialized carrier organisms, which cycle through distinct weaponry ranging from piercing bone-shards to explosive acid spores. A core mechanic is the upgradable shield system that not only absorbs enemy bullets but can be intentionally detached to act as a localized proximity mine against swarming bio-drones. The pacing is relentless, demanding quick memorization of narrow, organic passageways where environmental hazards are just as lethal as the grotesque mutations rushing from the shadows.
