Gulf War-II

Overview & History

Released amidst the geopolitical arcade boom of the early 1990s, *Gulf War-II* is a rare, unlicensed scrolling beat-'em-up that boldly fictionalized contemporary Middle Eastern conflicts into a gritty, quarter-munching spectacle. Developed by an obscure Taiwanese hardware outfit to capitalize on the media saturation of Operation Desert Storm, the game never saw an official Western console port, remaining an elusive holy grail for arcade preservationists. Unlike standard military shooters of the era, this title ditched the first-person perspective for close-quarters, martial-arts-infused urban combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players select from a trio of rogue-state defectors and elite mercenaries, each navigating hazard-strewn alleyways and fortified bunkers across five distinct stages. The combat system relies on a punch-kick-jump trinity, enhanced by a unique "Adrenaline Meter" that fills as players take or deal damage, unlocking temporary screen-clearing airstrike specials. Enemies drop makeshift weaponry ranging from iron pipes to assault rifles with limited ammunition. The game is notoriously punishing, featuring relentless wave designs, destructible environmental cover, and grueling boss fights against heavily armored mechanized units and rogue generals.
