Description

Gunbarich is a breakout-like shooter game that first appeared in arcades in 2001. Control the flipper and shoot the pink ball = puck to break all the blocks to clear the stage. You miss if you run out of time or drop the puck. You can use the flipper to shoot back enemy bullets as well as the puck. The enemy bullets you shoot back can cause massive damage if you hit an enemy character. You can also control the activation of the puck and enemy bullets hit by the flipper with left and right inputs.

Gunbarich

Overview & History

Released by Psikyo in 2001 for the Sega Naomi arcade hardware, Gunbarich serves as a fascinating spin-off and prequel to the developer's beloved Gunbird shoot-'em-up franchise. Instead of traditional vertical scrolling shootouts, Psikyo reimagined their magical fantasy universe through the lens of a brick-breaking block-buster, heavily inspired by Taito’s Arkanoid. The game bridges the gap between manic bullet-hell intensity and puzzle-arcade precision. Players select from a cast of iconic Gunbird characters—including the young witch Marion and the gruff inventor Teshin—who must bounce a magical orb to shatter encroaching walls of crystals and monsters before a timer runs out. Unlike standard block-breakers, Gunbarich infuses Psikyo's signature personality with vibrant hand-drawn sprites, eccentric boss battles, and a frantic pacing that prevents the gameplay from ever feeling stale or predictable.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Gunbarich requires players to maneuver a paddle at the bottom of the screen to keep a bouncing orb in play. However, the game introduces unique twists: characters can actively catch and hold the orb to aim their trajectory, charge up powerful melee sword swings to smash blocks directly, and collect a cascade of magical items dropped by destroyed tiles. These items grant elemental shots, lasers, multi-ball splits, and hazardous debuffs. The stage layouts are diverse, featuring moving barriers, enemy turrets that fire back at your paddle, and multi-phase end-of-level bosses that demand both puzzle-solving angles and aggressive offensive strikes. The fusion of fast physics-based ball manipulation with hack-and-slash melee mechanics creates an exhilarating, high-speed arcade adrenaline rush.
