Description

Operation Gunbuster is a first-person shooter, combining joysticks to move and light guns to shoot. The game has a dual monitor setup with 4 mounted light guns, allowing for single or two player coop games, as well as 2 player vs 2 player team battles. Players can select one of four cyborgs, each with a different special weapon; mine, laser, fire or spark.

The game takes place in Agalia City, a fictional science fiction city where cyborg crime has become rampant. In the year 2169, the city offered rewards for cyborg criminals and introduced an organization of hunters. As time passed, humanity began to refer to these hunters as “Gunbusters”.

Gunbuster

Overview & History

Released in Japanese arcades in 1993 by Banpresto, Gunbuster adapts Gainax’s iconic mecha anime masterpiece into a high-octane side-scrolling action game. Dropping players directly into the desperate cosmic war against the alien Space Monsters, the title captures the anime’s transition from high school training to apocalyptic interstellar warfare. Unlike typical run-and-gun titles, it allows players to pilot the legendary titular super robot through meticulously detailed stages, blending fast-paced melee combat with explosive projectile salvos. The game is celebrated by anime purists for faithfully recreating Noriko Takaya's harrowing journey, featuring dramatic cutscenes between levels and iconic musical motifs that elevate the coin-op experience far beyond a standard licensed cash-grab.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay alternates between intense side-scrolling beat-em-up action and dramatic pseudo-3D boss duels reminiscent of the anime's climax. Players control the Gunbuster through five demanding stages, utilizing a dual-action control scheme that maps light attacks, heavy projectile volleys, and defensive shielding. Characters can execute a variety of signature moves, including the devastating Buster Tomahawk, the lightning-fast Arm Punch combos, and the screen-clearing Homing Laser barrage. A specialized energy gauge requires careful management; depleting it leaves the machine vulnerable, forcing players to balance aggressive rushing tactics with well-timed dodges. Cooperative two-player drop-in functionality lets friends pilot the Gunbuster and Seltiger simultaneously, culminating in epic team-up finishers against colossal hive-mind adversaries.
