Description

Hard Head is a 2D side-scrolling platform game that puts players in the shoes of a ‘Hard Head’ – it’s similar to Super Mario Bros.

As you traverse the sixteen stages, you have to navigate through an obstacle course.

You have the ability destroy blocks with your head that sometimes contain power-ups and sometimes walls have to be destroyed with a hammer.

The various stages are filled with strange enemies like Indians, ducks, scissors, insects, cat like creatures and monsters. You fight these creatures with your bubble gun that forms a bubble a round them and lifts them up.

The bubble will break after a while, and jumping them on the head will kill them permanently. A stage can be completed if you kick a soccer ball in a goal at the end of each stage. You can play solo or with a friend.

Released in 1988 by SunA Electronics, Hard Head is a delightfully bizarre and wonderfully obscure arcade platformer that leans heavily into surreal cartoon humor. Unlike the polished fantasy worlds of Capcom or Sega contemporaries, SunA crafted a gritty, comedic universe where cavemen navigate neon-tinted prehistoric stages populated by wacky dinosaurs, bouncing cavewomen, and surreal wildlife. The game gained a cult following for its unconventional visual style and its slapstick approach to combat, standing out in smoky 80s arcades as a quirky alternative to standard action titles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players take control of zany prehistoric protagonists whose primary offensive weapon is literally using their own craniums. Armed with a hammer in one hand and an impossibly durable skull, the character can dispatch enemies either by bringing down the mallet or by executing a signature head-butt attack. Collecting special power-ups alters the player's cranial capabilities, granting projectiles or temporary invulnerability. Levels are broken down into horizontally scrolling stages filled with destructible terrain, collectible fruit for bonus points, and devious environmental hazards. Boss battles cap off each zone, requiring precise timing to land head-butt combos while dodging chaotic projectile volleys. The two-player simultaneous co-op mode elevates the arcade chaos, allowing friends to clear screens together while competing for high scores.
