Description

Hexion is a variant of the falling block puzzle game Hextris which in turn is a variant of Tetris that uses shapes made of hexagons instead of the usual tetraminoes. The aim of the game is still to align the falling blocks so that lines are created. They are then removed and points are earned. As the game goes on the level increases which leads to faster falling blocks. The game ends when blocks reach the top but the continue option allows the player to keep playing on the same level but with the score being reset.

In addition to the normal mode there are three additional game modes with their own playing fields. There is one that is extra wide, one that is extra long and one that is diagonally shaped as a slash. There are also three multiplayer modes for two players. There is a normal mode and a battle mode that both are played in split screen and there is also a co-op mode where the players share a wide playing field.

Hexion

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1992, Hexion is a visually striking and uniquely cerebral arcade puzzle-action game that stands out from the era's traditional beat-'em-ups and side-scrollers. Set within a surreal, cosmic dimension governed by the mysterious celestial overseer known as the Great Entity, the storyline tasks the player with manipulating dimensional geometry to prevent the collapse of reality. Across increasingly complex stages, you must restore energetic harmony to fragmented planar grids. Unlike standard coin-op titles of its time, Hexion combined fast-paced, reflex-based spatial manipulation with strategic puzzle-solving, earning it a cult following among arcade enthusiasts who appreciated its hypnotic aesthetic and challenging difficulty curve.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a rotating, multi-sided polygon core floating in the center of the screen, surrounded by chaotic energy blocks. Players control a specialized dimensional ship that orbits the perimeter of this central core. Your objective is to fire projected nodes onto the core's surface to match specific color patterns and clear away encroaching geometric hazards before they breach the outer boundary. As you progress, the core changes shape—evolving from simple cubes to complex dodecahedrons—requiring precise spatial awareness and rapid directional shifting. Special moves include a "Dimensional Shockwave" (clearing all adjacent blocks at the cost of a power meter) and a "Prism Shield" that temporarily deflects incoming hazard debris. Boss encounters test your pattern recognition, forcing you to exploit weak points that rotate dynamically with the core's geometry.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Rotate ship around the core perimeter
  • Action Keys: Fire energy nodes / Deploy Prism Shield
  • Enter: Start / Pause
