Description

Similar to regular basketball games, with one major exception the players have super powers which allow them to perform incredible feats.

A standard basketball game where you view a scrolling court from the sidelines. The major difference in this game is that your players (on offense or defense) have super powers which allow them to make incredible shots, or incredible blocks. Your power reserve is diminished each time you use a special power. An interesting take on what otherwise would be yet another non-descript basketball game.

Hoops '96

Overview & History

Released in 1996 during the golden age of frantic, coin-op sports titles, *Hoops '96* stormed arcades as Midway and Konami's fierce competitor attempted to capture the raw, unadulterated energy of street basketball. Eschewing simulation in favor of high-octane 3-on-3 arcade action, the game stripped away complex foul rules to focus purely on gravity-defying dunks, turbo-charged sprints, and cinematic backboard-shattering animations. Distinct from home console ports, the arcade original boasted vibrant, digitized sprite graphics and a booming hip-hop-infused soundtrack that defined the mid-90s urban sports aesthetic. Rather than featuring an overarching storyline, the campaign mode acts as a relentless tournament ladder where your gritty street squad travels across iconic asphalt and neon-lit rooftop courts to defeat rival crews and claim the ultimate underground championship trophy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, *Hoops '96* is built around momentum and the aggressive use of the "Turbo" meter. Matches are fast-paced, played across abbreviated quarters where defense is entirely optional and steals involve slapping opponents to the pavement without referee intervention. Each player on your three-person roster possesses distinct statistical attributes categorized into speed, shooting accuracy, and defensive blocking power. Performing consecutive successful baskets or defensive stops triggers a "On Fire" status, temporarily granting infinite turbo, superhuman jumping height, and the ability to drain three-pointers from anywhere past half-court. Character moves include spin-drives, pump-fakes, ferocious alley-oops, and gravity-defying windmill dunks that physically shatter the glass backboard if executed with maximal momentum. The game rewards aggressive passing and timing over tactical playbooks, making every possession a frantic race to the rim.
