Description
Hopping Mappy (ホッピングマッピー Hoppingu Mappī) is an arcade game which was released by Namco in 1986. It runs on Namco System 86 hardware, and, as the name suggests, it is the sequel to Mappy, which was released three years earlier.
In Hopping Mappy players control the Micro Police mouse, Mappy, as he bounces on a pogo stick to run circles around pink cats, called Meowkies, who patrol either vertically or horizontally. There is also Goro, a cat who patrols in a zigzag pattern, but he needs to take occasional breaks. There are eight treasures that a player must grab to complete a round, except on the bonus round where the player will just want to collect all the balloons that he can. The main intrigue here is getting past a blockade of Meowkies. The player controls are simple – he can bounce in any of the four directions, the only places he can land are the centres of the checkerboard squares (making for very few locations overall), and he will move at the same speed as the cats. If the player pushes the accelerator button and runs around, he will go twice as fast. When the cats have sped up (after a “Hurry Up” warning has appeared) they will match Mappy’s accelerated speed.

Overview & History
Released by Namco in 1986 as a sequel to the beloved 1983 arcade hit *Mappy*, Hopping Mappy shifts the chaotic cat-and-mouse dynamic into a frantic vertical maze challenge. Instead of traditional platforming, our police officer hero Mappy is permanently mounted on a pogo stick, forcing players to master continuous, bouncy momentum. The storyline follows Mappy as he infiltrates a sprawling Meowky hideout across multiple themed floors to recover stolen loot before time expires. Operating on Namco's classic hardware, this coin-op obscurity trades the horizontal tightrope walking of the original for aggressive vertical exploration, creating a cult classic that demands precision timing and spatial awareness.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike its predecessor, Mappy cannot walk; he bounces incessantly, requiring players to judge landing zones and platform heights carefully. The stage layout consists of layered platforms, trampolines, and fragile glass floors that shatter under Mappy's pogo stick after repeated landings, altering the traversal routes dynamically. The mischievous Nyamco (Goro) and his band of Meowkys pursue Mappy relentlessly. To survive, Mappy must collect stolen items—such as televisions, paintings, and crowns—while utilizing environmental hazards like conveyor belts and sliding doors to trap or squish the pursuing felines. Grabbing flashing bonus items triggers temporary screen-clearing shockwaves, giving the frantic rodent essential breathing room to clear each stage.
