Description

Enter the world of off-road racing as 4 vehicles will face each other, on a series of tracks which are based around flipped and reversed versions of a core selection. Fame, glory and bikini clad women await your victories and the taste of dirt awaits if you fail. Let a computer car beat you and you lose one of your 3 credits.

Successful races bring more money, which can be used to soup up their machine. Boosts to top speed, grip and acceleration can be purchased, and your nitro boost must be kept topped up. If you are desperate for upgrades, you can buy into your spare credits.

Only your off-road driving abilities will be enough to pull you to first place in these races. Play alone or with up to 3 other players (depending on the version) in this classic arcade game.

Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off-Road

Overview & History

Released by Leland Corporation in 1989, Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off-Road revolutionized the arcade racing genre by shifting the perspective to a top-down, isometric view inspired by traditional slot-car racing. Eschewing complex narratives for pure, unadulterated adrenaline, the game places players in the boots of legendary off-road racer Ivan Stewart, affectionately nicknamed "The Ironman." The arcade cabinet was famous for its distinctive three-person simultaneous play setup, featuring three full-size steering wheels and custom pedal configurations that drew massive crowds in smoke-filled arcades. Visually, the game stood out with its vibrant, sun-drenched dirt tracks, complete with hazardous mud puddles, towering moguls, and treacherous switchbacks that required split-second decision-making. As players blasted their way through a grueling circuit of dirt tracks, stadium bowls, and winding courses, the announcer's gravelly voice bellowed iconic sound bites like "The crawler has a flat!" and "Go, go, go!" cementing its status as an arcade masterpiece.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional linear racers, Super Off-Road is a multi-lap endurance test where up to three human players (and AI opponents driving the yellow, blue, and red trucks) compete concurrently on a single screen without split-screen constraints. Players pilot heavy-duty 4x4 pickup trucks, navigating undulating tracks fraught with obstacles such as water hazards, massive boulders, and steep jumps that can instantly flip a careless driver. A core mechanic of the game is the collection of nitro boosts scattered across the dirt or awarded between races, which can be deployed to rocket past competitors or clear massive chasms. Between heats, players visit the speed shop to spend hard-earned cash bags collected on the track to upgrade their vehicle's top speed, acceleration, shock absorbers, and tire traction, or to purchase additional nitro supplies. Managing cash flow and balancing vehicle upgrades is essential for surviving the increasingly brutal later tracks, where AI rubber-banding and chaotic track designs test the limits of driver reflexes.
