Released during the golden age of arcade experimentalism in 1982 by Sigma Enterprises, Island is a rare, single-screen platformer that predates many of the genre's standard conventions. Cast as a shipwrecked cartographer stranded in a surreal archipelago, players must navigate hostile, shifting shorelines to collect ancient navigational relics while evading indigenous fauna and treacherous tidal shifts. Unlike its contemporaries that favored linear progression, Island introduced an early risk-reward economy, forcing players to choose between the safety of high ground and the high-value artifacts buried in the sinking quicksand valleys below.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across ten distinct, vertically looping coastal stages featuring dynamic environmental hazards. Players must time their ascents carefully as rising ocean tides submerge lower platforms, transforming safe terrain into deadly underwater zones where movement speed is severely penalized. The protagonist possesses a dual-purpose grappling hook, which serves both as a traversal tool to swing across perilous chasms and as a defense mechanism to stun aggressive tropical wildlife such as venomous reef crabs and territorial sea-gulls. Accumulating score multipliers requires harvesting rare pearls found exclusively inside destabilizing whirlpools, creating a tense arcade loop where greed frequently leads to an untimely demise.
