Description

A very impressive vertically scrolling beat-em-up with cool monsters like Dracula. Kairos has kidnapped children and trapped them in mirrors inside his castle. The player takes the role of Mac in his quest so save them.

The main portion of the game is spend with walking through the castle and fighting Kairo’s henchmen – either with bare hands or with weapons which can be collected on the way. However, the way is not completely linear: there are different routes to take. A boss room waits at the end of each level (overall five). There are also a multitude of extras to collect which have effects like destroying all enemies on the screen or warping. Freeing enough children by punching out mirrors gives a short time of invulnerability.

Kyros

Overview & History

Released into the fading golden era of 1990s coin-op arcades by a little-known independent developer, Kyros is a dark, mythical side-scrolling action title that stood out against the saturation of brightly colored fighters of its time. The storyline plunges players into the obsidian depths of the Underworld, where the titular protagonist—a banished demigod armed with the glowing Soul-Scythe—must battle through five shifting realms of torment to overthrow the usurper god Thanatos. Unlike its contemporaries that favored button-mashing, Kyros earned a cult following for its punishing difficulty curve, atmospheric MIDI soundtrack that utilized FM synthesis for haunting choral chants, and hand-drawn sprite work depicting grotesque mythological beasts, ranging from multi-headed hydras to weeping marble statues that come alive to crush intruders.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loops blend fast-paced hack-and-slash combat with intricate platforming over bottomless pits of magma and collapsing bone bridges. Kyros possesses a varied move set: standard three-hit scythe combos, a high-arcing aerial slash, a sweeping ground-sweep that trips shielded skeletons, and a devastating 'Wrath Burst' area-of-effect attack that consumes accumulated soul-gauge energy harvested from fallen foes. Players must strategically manage their stamina meter; executing too many consecutive heavy attacks leaves Kyros momentarily winded and vulnerable to enemy counter-attacks. Hidden alcoves throughout the ruined temples contain ancient runes that permanently upgrade weapon range or grant temporary invulnerability shields. Boss encounters require pattern memorization, demanding precise dodging and counter-attacks during brief windows of vulnerability.
