Landmaker

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1998, Landmaker is a wildly eccentric, fast-paced puzzle-action arcade game that brilliantly merges block-stacking logic with competitive grid-based territory warfare. Set in a whimsical fantasy world recovering from a devastating cataclysm, the storyline follows various eccentric adventurers—ranging from sword-wielding knights and wizards to quirky goblins and giant mechs—racing to construct and conquer floating continental landmasses. As rival factions collide over the shrinking real estate of the sky, they must push, stack, and match blocks to reclaim the earth.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard falling-block puzzle games, Landmaker operates on a dynamic grid where players control an on-screen avatar moving along the perimeter of the playfield. Instead of waiting for pieces to drop, you actively summon and push blocks (representing land, trees, and castles) directly onto the board from your current position. The core mechanic revolves around matching blocks of the same color or type. When you connect matching blocks horizontally or vertically, they fuse together to form massive territory zones. Successfully clearing lines rains debris down on your opponent's side of the split-screen arena, shrinking their available workspace. Strategic placement is crucial, as chaining massive combos summons powerful character-specific summons—such as dragons, lightning bolts, and giant golems—that drastically alter the board state, crush enemy blocks, and turn the tide of battle in tense, high-stakes multiplayer showdowns.
