Description
The Bungeling Empire has stolen a huge cache of gold from its rightful owners, and your mission is to infiltrate its treasury and recapture it. This entails progressing through 150 screens of platforms, ladders and ropes.
The Empire has sent robotic guards down to protect the gold, and contact with any of these will cost you a life. Your method of escaping them is to press fire to dig a hole in their line of movement, thus causing them to fall in briefly, allowing you to move across the gap safely. Once all the gold has been collected, a ladder allowing you to move onto the next screen is added. Completing these screens often requires forward planning and precision.
This was one of the earliest games to include a level editor, allowing the creation of new level designs with no programming skill.
Lode Runner
Overview & History
Released by Broderbund in 1983 and subsequently adapted for the arcade by Namco/Irem in 1984, Lode Runner is a foundational platform-puzzle masterpiece. Conceptualized by Douglas Smith while he was a student at the University of Washington, the game casts players as an unnamed futuristic security officer—traditionally adorned in a white jumpsuit and hard hat—known as the Galactic Runner. The overarching narrative involves infiltrating the subterranean vaults of the evil Bungeling Empire to retrieve stolen mountains of gold bullion. Across 50 fiercely challenging, single-screen levels, the Runner must outwit erratic, pursuing Bungeling security guards who patrol the multi-tiered ladders, ropes, and brick platforms. Unlike typical action titles of the era, the protagonist possesses no offensive weaponry to eliminate foes; survival hinges entirely on spatial awareness, cunning excavation, and split-second puzzle-solving.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
At its core, Lode Runner revolutionised puzzle-platforming by introducing destructible terrain as a primary mechanic. Players control the Runner as they navigate steel girders, climb horizontal ropes, and drop through crumbling brick floors. The defining action involves using a laser gun to blast temporary holes into the brick flooring directly to the left or right of the character. When enemies fall into these pits, they become temporarily trapped, allowing the Runner to walk harmlessly over their heads. Over a few seconds, the bricks regenerate; if an unfortunate guard is still inside when the bricks heal, they are instantly disintegrated, only to respawn moments later at the top of the screen carrying a hidden gold piece. Players must collect every scattered gold chest to unlock the exit ladder leading to the next stage. Adding intense psychological pressure, enemies frequently pick up gold themselves, requiring the player to trap them, force them to drop the loot, and intercept it. Completing the journey demands mastery of complex maneuvers, including baiting guards into falling pits simultaneously, running across the heads of falling enemies, and digging multi-layered vertical shafts to escape dead ends.
