Description

In 1986, Irem released their fourth and final arcade conversions of Lode Runner. Like the previous two, it contained 30 selected levels from the 150 original levels. However, it is the only version to contain a new mode of play: two player cooperative. In this mode, two players must work together to capture every gold ingot in 18 stages, some of which cannot be reached without a pair of players working together to achieve their goal. This is the only version out of Irem’s four arcade releases that was not translated into English and sold directly to the American market.

Lode Runner IV: Teikoku Karano Dasshutsu

Overview & History

Released in Japan in 1996 by Visco, Lode Runner IV: Teikoku Karano Dasshutsu (Escape from the Empire) is a fascinating arcade deep-cut that revitalized Brøderbund’s classic platform-puzzle formula. Eschewing the standard futuristic gold-rush tropes of its predecessors, this installment drops the iconic protagonist into a dark, steampunk-infused military empire. The storyline casts players as a rogue operative infiltrating heavily guarded imperial strongholds to liberate stolen national treasures while sabotaging the mechanized regime from within. Unlike typical home-console ports, this arcade iteration was designed with high-stakes tension in mind, featuring aggressive enemy artificial intelligence, time-attack pressure, and beautifully rendered 2D pixel-art sprites that gave the aging franchise a gritty, industrial aesthetic overhaul.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loops retain the classic grid-based climbing, running, and block-digging mechanics, but introduces verticality and trap-heavy level designs. Players must maneuver through labyrinthine stages, using their trusty laser digger to melt bricks either to the left or right of their current standing position. This creates temporary pit traps that immobilize pursuing imperial guards long enough for the player to vault safely across their heads. However, melted blocks slowly regenerate, meaning trapped enemies will eventually respawn and climb out—or worse, fill the hole back in by dropping gold nuggets they were carrying. To survive the empire's wrath, players must master advanced techniques such as baiting guards into intentional loops, exploiting falling block physics, and utilizing suspended steel ropes to traverse bottomless chasms while collecting every single piece of glowing imperial bullion to unlock the exit portal.
