Description
Mr. Do!’s Castle (known in Japan as Mr. Do vs. Unicorns) is an action platform game which has you in a castle consisting of several floors, each of which contain a variety of blocks. You control Mr. Do! the clown who has a hammer which can be used to knock out the blocks in the floor. Wandering throughout the castle are deadly unicorns which are constantly trying to catch you. Your goal is to earn as many points as possible and to progress through the increasingly difficult castles.
There are two ways to complete a castle; you can either destroy all of the deadly unicorns by crushing them with blocks, or you can knock out all of the blocks which have a cherry symbol on them. In addition to the cherry blocks, there are three blocks with a key. If all three key blocks are knocked out, the door on the roof of the castle unlocks. If you make it to the door, all of the unicorns will temporarily become harmless and will contain a letter. If you hit a letter unicorn, you will earn a letter in the word EXTRA. Spell the complete word, and you will earn an extra life.
The last type of block you’ll encounter has a skull on it. If you knock out two skull blocks, all of the blocks between them will also be knocked out and replaced with a bridge. As the castles progress, the castle layout will become trickier and the unicorns become faster and more numerous.

Overview & History
Released by Universal in 1983 as the second major sequel to the beloved platformer *Mr. Do!*, *Mr. Do!'s Castle* shifts the circus-themed protagonist away from digging dirt and toward medieval fortress defense. Designed by Yoshio Hosare, this arcade coin-op departed from Universal's earlier maze-digging formulas by introducing vertical platforming puzzle mechanics heavily inspired by games like *Donkey Kong* and *Space Panic*. Players control the plucky little clown, Mr. Do, as he defends his gothic citadel from a relentless horde of green, horned unicorn-like monsters called "Crunchies." Unlike its predecessor, which relied on rolling red apples to crush enemies, this sequel arms our hero with a trusty wooden mallet to bash through floor panels, dropping pursuers into the murky depths below.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The core objective of *Mr. Do!'s Castle* is to clear each screen of all Crunchies while collecting colored letters to spell "EXTRA" or gathering the elusive golden keys to open a treasure chest. Levels are constructed with multi-tiered wooden scaffolding, ladders, and ropes. Mr. Do cannot jump directly over enemies; instead, his primary offensive maneuver is using his mallet to smash through the floor tiles. When a monster falls through a freshly hammered hole, it becomes temporarily trapped, allowing Mr. Do to climb down and clobber them from above, or smash them completely if another tile drops onto their head. Strategy comes into play as players can also sever rope bridges to drop entire sections of flooring, plunging multiple enemies into the abyss simultaneously. If a Crunchy catches up to Mr. Do, or if time runs out, a life is lost. Clearing boards unlocks increasingly frantic stages featuring moving platforms, sliding floors, and aggressive enemies that can patch the holes Mr. Do desperately relies on for survival.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Mr. Do left, right, up ladders, and down ropes
