Nova 2001 is a science fiction arcade shooter. The player pilots a single spacecraft on successive offensive missions to clear formations of hostile craft across abstract space sectors.

The player controls a ship that moves freely within a fixed single-screen arena and can fire in eight directions. Enemy formations enter the playfield from multiple sides in waves; a stage is completed when all enemies on the field are destroyed. Occasional items appear that provide temporary weapon upgrades or area-clearing effects.

Set in the distant future of 2001, humanity's deep-space mining colonies face annihilation from an aggressive alien armada known as the Zardon. Players pilot the advanced Nova fighter craft, navigating perilous labyrinthine sectors of deep space to rescue trapped colonists and obliterate the mechanical insectoid swarm before they can harvest the galaxy's core energy. While it never achieved the ubiquitous coin-op saturation of *Pac-Man* or *Galaga*, *Nova 2001* carved out a dedicated cult following in arcades for its demanding reflexes and unique mechanic where players can strategically collect crystal power-ups to temporarily transform their ship into an invincible, spinning buzzsaw capable of carving through dense enemy waves.
