Description

Sega decided to make their last game in the Fantasy Zone series different. While the previous games were straight-up shooters, in this one the gameplay made you go around mazes, collecting all the dots while avoiding enemies.

Every world you travel to consist of three mazes, and after you complete all three, a bonus round appears where the object is to collect all coins before time expires. While you are collecting the dots in the normal mazes, you must touch the enemy’s energy, a flashing red spot within each maze to avoid 2nd-generation enemies from entering the mazes.

Opa Opa

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1986, Opa Opa stands as a landmark title in the history of shoot 'em up games, famously recognized as the precursor to the beloved Fantasy Zone series. As Sega's cute 'em up mascot, the sentient, spherical spaceship Opa Opa embarks on a poignant quest across surreal, pastel-colored planetary worlds to defeat the dark forces of the Menon system and ultimately discover the tragic truth regarding his missing father. Unlike traditional vertical or horizontal shooters of its era, this arcade classic introduces innovative multi-directional stage exploration, vibrant surrealism, and a unique economy system that permanently shifted the genre's design philosophy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate Opa Opa across horizontally looping stages, tasked with destroying stationary enemy generators called 'bases' to clear each level. Every destroyed base yields gold coins, which serve as the lifeblood of the gameplay loop. Between skirmishes, players can land on designated shop planets to spend accumulated currency. Here, Opa Opa can purchase an expansive arsenal of temporary and permanent upgrades, including speed boosts, diverse weapon types like wide-spread 7-Way shots and heavy bombs, and even extra lives or wings that alter movement mechanics. The game features seven distinct worlds, culminating in intense boss battles where players must master attack patterns while balancing offensive pressure and defensive positioning. The blend of vibrant, whimsical aesthetics with surprisingly challenging bullet-evading combat creates a uniquely captivating arcade experience.
