Description

Ordyne is a horizontal side-scrolling shoot ’em up (also considered a “cute ’em up” due to its lighter tone) that puts players in the role of Yûichirô Tomari, a genius scientist, and Sunday Chin, his faithful assistant. The two heroes must rescue Tomari’s fiancee Kana Aibara from the evil Dr. Kubota.

During gameplay, players can obtain crystals that can be used to buy special weapons, extra lives, and other power-ups at shops located throughout the levels. There are also bonus games that allow players to win multiple crystals or points by shooting at rotating targets. Ordyne is two-player simultaneous.

Ordyne

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1988 for the System 2 arcade board, Ordyne is a vibrant, horizontally scrolling shoot-'up infused with whimsical, mad-scientist steampunk aesthetics. Unlike the grim, cosmic battlefields typical of late-80s arcade shooters, this cult classic drops players into a colorful cartoon world engineered by the eccentric Dr. Ein. The storyline follows the brilliant doctor and his rival-turned-ally, the slick pilot Floyd, as they mount a rescue mission to save Dr. Ein's kidnapped girlfriend from the clutches of the villainous Kubota. Utilizing Namco's hardware capabilities, the game stands out with its gorgeous, multi-layered parallax backgrounds, chunky sprite designs, and an infectiously upbeat jazz-fusion soundtrack composed by Norio Nakagata. Though it later saw a coveted conversion to the PC Engine in Japan, the arcade original remains the definitive way to experience its manic, item-shop-driven brand of aerial combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Ordyne puts a unique economic spin on the standard shmup formula by incorporating floating merchant balloons managed by the plump, pig-like merchant, Kana. As players blast through wave after wave of surreal enemies—ranging from flying mechanical fish to airborne teacots—they collect gold coins scattered across the screen. At strategic points during a stage, Kana will drift into view, allowing players to pull up a shop menu and spend their hard-earned cash on power-ups. Instead of simple weapon upgrades, the store offers a dizzying array of eccentric offensive and defensive gear, including homing missiles, devastating bombs, speed boosters, and defensive option pods that mimic Floyd's ship. The game alternates between horizontal aerial navigation and occasional vertically-oriented boss encounters, requiring quick reflexes and smart currency management. Players must balance aggressive enemy eradication with coin collection, ensuring they are adequately equipped to tackle the screen-filling, multi-form mechanical monstrosities waiting at the end of each stage.
