Description

Two pirates are tasked by their captain to find three pieces of a treasure map on the islands Shetland, La Isabela and Papeete, before finding the hidden treasure cash on the obscure island Tiuanapa. Every stage has the player in third-person perspective shooting at pirates and scenery, throwing bombs, and doing slide maneuvers to dodge enemy attacks. Powerups are obtained from shooting a flying witch repeatedly or other passing creatures. A stage is won when the enemy meter at the bottom is depleted or a boss enemy is beaten.

Pirates

Overview & History

Released in 1994 by Electronic Arts, Pirates! Gold—widely recognized in arcade and home ports under the moniker Pirates—immerses players in the turbulent, sun-drenched waters of the 17th-century Caribbean. As a ambitious young captain seeking fame, fortune, and lost family members stolen by the cruel Spanish Marquis de Montalban, you sail across an open sandbox world governed by shifting colonial powers. Blending real-time ship-to-ship naval combat, tactical sword duels, and historical trading, this title redefined arcade strategy by letting players choose their allegiances among the English, French, Dutch, and Spanish empires.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay shifts dynamically between overhead world navigation, frantic maritime cannon battles, and cinematic, one-on-one melee skirmishes. Players must manage crew morale, accumulate hidden treasure maps, plunder enemy galleons, and execute daring coastal raids on heavily fortified towns. In sword combat, players utilize rapid thrusts, parries, and retreats to exhaust enemy captains, capitalizing on unique character moves tailored to your chosen fencing style (ranging from aggressive fencing to agile acrobatics). Victory grants promotions, land grants, and the ultimate goal of retiring as a legendary Governor-General with a wealthy spouse.
