Description

Pole Position II was developed by Namco and published by Atari in 1983

In the sequel to Pole Position, you are again driving an F-1 racer in a timed qualifying run, trying to achieve the pole position. Then it is off to the race, in hopes of taking that top spot. The difference in Pole Position II and it’s predecessor is that now you have four tracks to select from.

Pole Position II

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1983 as the successor to the genre-defining original, Pole Position II turbocharges arcade racing history by introducing four distinct, real-world-inspired tracks instead of just the classic Fuji Speedway. Running on Namco’s powerful custom hardware, this sequel elevates graphical fidelity and pacing, cementing itself as an arcade powerhouse of the golden era. Players step into the firesuit of a Formula 1 driver tasked with surviving heart-pounding time-attack qualifiers and high-octane Grand Prix races. While there is no narrative storyline, the high-stakes drama of racing against the clock and rival AI cars provides all the narrative tension necessary.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game kicks off with a mandatory Time Trial qualifying lap where players must set a fast time on the iconic Fuji Speedway, Test Track, Nürburgring, or Seaside circuit to determine their starting grid position. Once the Grand Prix commences, the screen adopts a pseudo-3D rear-view perspective where the horizon dynamically shifts as you tackle hairpin turns and elevation changes. Mechanics demand absolute precision: you must navigate relentless AI opponents, avoid explosive roadside billboards, and master the two-speed gear shifter (Low and High) to maintain optimal RPMs through corners. Crashing into obstacles results in a fiery, time-wasting explosion, though your car respawns instantly to keep the frantic momentum alive. The iconic digital announcer shouting "Prepare to start!" and "You cracked up!" remains legendary.
